sva showcase

August 30, 2004 | Filed in: | No Comments »

I’ve put up 12 pieces of my work in a showcase in an SVA building. It will be there until September 10th, so make sure to drop by and take a look. Pieces in this show include 3 charcoal drawings of ships, 4 watercolor portraits, 1 pencil drawing, and 3 papercuts. If you get over there soon enough, you may be able to get your hands on your own “artist card,” which are little cards I printed up at Kinko’s. Each one has a small print of one of my pieces on it.

Address: 380 2nd Avenue (21/22)
Dates: Aug 30 - Sept 10
Times: 9am - 9pm

end of casting class

August 19, 2004 | Filed in: | No Comments »

Earlier this week, I cast two more Agador IIs (they must be Agador II.2 and Agador II.3, but who’s counting?). The mold works great each time, and requires only about 20 minutes of cleaning. These last two castings proceeded more smoothly than the first, due to the numerous clamps. Each guy has required some cleaning and patching, but I’ve learned so much through this process that I’m sure my next mold will be much more pristine.

So, that’s the end of casting class. The studio is closed until late September, at which point I will take another figure sculpting class, and go in at other times to make a new mold. Now that I’ve experimented on Agador II, I’m thinking that next I’ll try to mold and cast Chris or the Standing Man… or maybe Lynn. Stay tuned.

cast in plaster

Last night I removed the mothermold and rubber mold from Agador II (slightly damaging him in the process!) and cast him in plaster! The plaster-casting process was extremely messy, as the mold kept leaking. If only SVA provided more than two pony clamps in the whole school … maybe next time. Here are pictures of Agador II:

The next (and final) step this summer is to clean up the seam and any other places that I want to edit (e.g. level off the bottom, fix his ear, etc).

mothermold

This week I’ve been creating a mothermold for Agador II’s rubber mold. The purpose of the mothermold is the support the rubber. When the rubber mold is just hanging around, the mothermold prevents it from collapsing and losing its form. When I cast in the rubber mold, the mothermold will prevent it from wiggling around and give it support from the weight of the casting material. Here are some pictures of Agador II getting his mothermold made of aqua resin and fiberglass:
